Safety and security on Tallink Silja Line ships

Passengers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the safety information available in cabins and corridors or by consulting with the ship’s personnel.

AS Tallink Grupp passenger security regulations
  • General safety guidelines

For the safety and comfort of everyone onboard, all passengers are required to adhere to the ship’s safety regulations. These rules are enforced by the ship’s captain, and failure to comply may result in consequences, such as being placed in restricted areas or removal from the ship.

    • Behaviour: Passengers are expected to behave respectfully towards fellow travellers and crew members at all times. Disruptive or threatening actions, including intoxication or indecent behaviour, are strictly prohibited. A passenger who behaves disruptively, fails to comply with established regulations, or is indecently dressed will not be allowed onboard.
    • Captain’s Authority: Individuals who cannot control their actions may be placed in designated safety areas by the captain’s order, potentially losing access to their cabin. Passengers causing a disturbance may be disembarked at the next port or handed over to local authorities if necessary.
    • Identification: Passengers must present valid travel documents and boarding passes at all times. If the passenger fails to carry valid travel documents and the company incurs costs or is affected by this failure, the passenger is responsible for covering these expenses.
    • Bag and vehicle checks: Baggage and vehicles may be subject to security checks. Refusal to comply could result in denied boarding.
    • Food restrictions in restaurants: Passengers are not permitted to consume their own food in onboard restaurants. Exceptions are granted only for special dietary needs or baby food and baby beverages.
    • Food and alcohol restrictions: Bringing food and alcohol on board during cruises and special cruises is strictly prohibited. Exceptions apply to special dietary needs or baby food. Any prohibited items discovered by ship personnel will be confiscated without compensation.
    • Alcohol consumption: Alcohol can only be consumed in designated areas onboard, and it is prohibited to bring alcohol purchased outside the ship into these areas.
    • Narcotic Substances: The possession and use of narcotics onboard are strictly prohibited. Passengers carrying prescribed narcotic substances (medicines) must have a valid medical certificate and provide it upon request when needed.
    • Firearms and dangerous items: Passengers are prohibited from bringing dangerous items on board. Firearms and ammunition must be declared during booking or at the information desk and stored securely onboard. The crew may inspect these items and their documents. If documentation is missing, transport may be refused. The company is not liable for any loss or damage resulting from the refusal to transport these items.
    • Open flames and electric devices: Open flames are banned except for smoking in designated areas. Electric devices for cooking are not allowed in cabins or public spaces, and unattended electronics connected to the ship’s power grid are prohibited. Bicycles and scooters (including electric) can only be used for embarkation or disembarkation via the car deck.
    • Smoking: Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is only allowed in designated areas. Tampering with smoke detectors is strictly prohibited.
    • Passenger areas and noise: Passengers must stay in designated areas. Loud devices like speakers are prohibited in cabin areas and may be confiscated if necessary.
    • Group leader responsibility: Group leaders must ensure that youth groups follow safety rules and cooperate with the ship’s crew in case of any issues.
    • Cabin items & damage: Items like pillows and bed linens must stay in the cabin and not be damaged. Any unlawful behavior, such as theft or tampering with safety equipment, will be reported to the police. Passengers are liable for any damage they cause and must compensate the ship accordingly.
    • Prohibited activities: Sales, lotteries, and political activities are not allowed without prior approval.
    • Personal belongings: Tallink Silja Line is not responsible for valuables left in the cabin. Passengers can use storage facilities if needed.
    • Criminal activity: If a crime occurs onboard, the captain will ensure the evidence is preserved, following the ship’s flag state laws.
    • Photography: Taking photos or videos of other passengers or crew is only allowed with their consent.
  • Safety training and personnel
    • Ship crew: All crew members are thoroughly trained in safety protocols and participate in weekly drills covering emergency situations such as fire safety and lifeboat handling.
    • Vessels: Our ships undergo regular inspections, certifications, internal audits, and maintenance by international maritime authorities to ensure safety standards are met.
    • Emergency situations: In the event of an emergency, passengers will hear an alarm signal (seven short sounds followed by one long sound). They must proceed to the nearest assembly point, following evacuation plans and instructions from the crew.
    • Rescue equipment: Life jackets for both adults and children are available at assembly points.
  • Fire safety measures
    • Onboard Systems: The ship is equipped with smoke detectors, temperature sensors, and sprinklers. Additionally, the car deck is monitored by patrols, and smoking is strictly prohibited in non-designated areas.
  • Car deck safety
    • All items in vehicles must be securely fastened.
    • Smoking and open flames are prohibited on the car deck.
    • Access to the car deck is restricted during the voyage.
